Beacons of Change: Victoria West, Oil on Canvas, 24" x 36", 2025
This portrait of Victoria West is inspired by an article discussing her role as a coach for the University of Minnesota (UMN) Women’s Rowing Team, titled “Coaches for Change.” The article emphasizes her experience as a woman of color in a predominantly white sport and highlights her efforts to recruit more individuals of color to promote inclusion and inspire young girls in rowing. Throughout the portrait, layers of color are rendered realistically, with vibrant pops of color on her face that complement the lively background. Bright hues can evoke feelings of warmth and create a welcoming environment, which reflects the energy of inclusivity that West embodies as a coach. The free and fluid brushstrokes establish a natural pose, allowing this portrait to capture a significant moment in time and to celebrate the legacy of Victoria West.
To reflect her message, the painting incorporates significant phrases from her interview, such as “I can do that too,” “Make change, good change,” and “I’ve walked through doors that others have helped me open or helped me realize I can open myself.” These phrases contribute to her narrative as a rower on the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) team and then went on to become a novice coach at UMN. The Grand Valley Arch is included in the piece as a marker of her success. With the help of opportunities provided by GVSU, Victoria is recognized as one of the few female coaches of color at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level in rowing. Rowing has played a significant role in her life, and she returned to it after graduation, emphasizing the importance of these opportunities and embracing the idea that “You can do hard things.”
About Beacons of Change
Part of the inspiration for the project comes from the Case Western Reserve University Trailblazer Project. Grand Valley Alumni were selected and interviewed as a way to know how Grand Valley has helped shaped their future. The alumni were each paired with a student artist from the Department of Visual and Media Arts in order to create a vision for a portrait done by the student.
The Art Gallery then purchased the portraits to be part of the GVSU collection and display them in the campus libraries.
This project was created to inspire current and future students and show the impact they can create in their own lives. This project sought to foster more representation around GVSU campus with these portraits.

Testimonial from Victoria West
“Honored is an understatement. I cannot believe this is hanging on my favorite building on campus for years to come. I was one of the four chosen for the Beacons of Change Award at GVSU and Carly was selected to paint a portrait of me from an interview I did. I can’t believe the detail, how she layered quotes from my favorite interview I did while coaching and my time at Grand Valley Rowing. Even just the thoughtfulness of adding in a sketch of the boat. All of it. Incrediably honored.” Victoria West
